Thailand is a country in its own right. Its official name is the Kingdom of Thailand, and it is located in Southeast Asia. It is not a province or territory inside another country. Bangkok is its capital.
If you meant “What continent is Thailand in?”, the answer is Asia. Southeast Asia is the region within that continent. I find it useful to separate those levels before looking at destinations: Asia is the continent, Thailand is the country, and Bangkok or Chiang Mai is a city within it.
Where to find Thailand on a map
Look south of China, on the mainland of Southeast Asia. Thailand has a broad northern and central section, followed by a long southern extension down the Malay Peninsula. The entire country lies north of the equator.
Thailand shares land borders with four countries:
- Myanmar: along much of the western side and part of the north.
- Laos: to the north and east.
- Cambodia: to the southeast.
- Malaysia: at the southern end of Thailand’s mainland territory.
China and Vietnam are nearby on a regional map, but neither shares a land border with Thailand. The western coast of the southern peninsula faces the Andaman Sea; the eastern coast faces the Gulf of Thailand. Thailand has many islands, but the country as a whole is not an island.
Thailand, Bangkok, Chiang Mai and Phuket are different kinds of place
Bangkok is the capital city in central Thailand, near the northern end of the Gulf of Thailand. You may also see it called Krung Thep. These names refer to the same capital, not two competing destinations. The distinction is explained further in our guide to Thailand’s capital.
Chiang Mai is a city in northern Thailand and also the name of its surrounding province. A hotel described as being in Chiang Mai Province can therefore be well outside the city. For a booking, I would check the actual map pin rather than treating the province name as a promise of a central location.
Phuket is an island and province in southern Thailand on the Andaman side. Phuket Town is one place within it; a Phuket beach hotel may be elsewhere on the island. Krabi is a separate province on the Andaman coast, with mainland areas and islands. It is not another name for Phuket.
These distinctions matter when choosing where to visit in Thailand. A country name tells you which national destination you have chosen; a city, island, beach and hotel address tell you where your trip will actually take place.
Was Thailand once called Siam?
Yes. Siam is the country’s former name. Thailand became the name in 1939; Siam returned briefly after the Second World War, and Thailand was adopted again in 1949. An old map or historical book using “Siam” is referring to that earlier name, though historical boundaries should not automatically be read as identical to today’s.
Thailand is a constitutional monarchy. The change from absolute to constitutional monarchy took place in 1932; the monarchy did not simply end then. That distinction helps make sense of references to a Thai king alongside a prime minister and parliament.
Basic names you will see while planning
The official language is Thai, and the currency is the Thai baht, abbreviated THB. “Thai” also describes people, food and other things from Thailand. “Thailand” is the country’s English name.
For a booking form, choose Thailand in the country field, then enter the relevant city or province and the full address. For a geography question, “an independent country in Southeast Asia” is the direct answer.
