I would start a February trip with two decisions: whether I want warmth or winter, and which week I can travel. Thailand’s Andaman coast, Pacific Costa Rica and the Maldives make sense for a beach holiday. Japan offers a very different reason to go: snow, skiing and Sapporo’s winter festival. Cape Town is in summer, while Venice and New Orleans draw visitors around Carnival.
The week matters as much as the country. In 2027, Sapporo Snow Festival runs from 4 to 11 February, Tet begins in Vietnam on 6 February, and both Venice Carnival and New Orleans’ Mardi Gras reach their final day on 9 February. A trip in the last week of the month needs a different festival plan.
My shortlist depends on the region and the kind of holiday, since weather and prices vary within each country. The dated events refer to the coming February, in 2027; the seasonal comparisons help with February trips more generally.
Where I would go for warm weather
Thailand: an Andaman beach, or a more carefully planned Chiang Mai visit
For a February beach holiday in Thailand, I would look first at Phuket or Krabi on the Andaman coast. February falls within the coast’s main November–April travel season. It is also part of Thailand’s popular visitor season. Compare actual accommodation prices before assuming the month brings quieter beaches or cheaper rooms.
Chiang Mai, in northern Thailand, suits a different trip. I would choose it for time in the city and its markets, with outdoor days kept flexible. Sunday Walking Street is a useful anchor for a visit: on Sunday evenings, food and craft stalls occupy Rachadamnoen Road from Tha Phae Gate in the Old City. That gives me a reason to include a Sunday even when no festival fits the trip.
February can also bring the transition from Thailand’s cooler season towards hotter weather, usually around the middle of the month. The boundary varies each year. Air quality needs its own check: northern Thailand can have haze during February, with late February a particular concern. An early-month booking does not guarantee clear air. Check Air4Thai close to the trip and during the stay before committing to long outdoor days.
The Chiang Mai Flower Festival is worth considering if its dates suit your visit, but do not assume it always happens on the first weekend. The 2026 edition ran from 13 to 15 February, with the parade on 14 February and displays at Nong Buak Haad Park. Dates for the 2027 edition were not confirmed at this update. If you are travelling specifically for the festival, wait for that year’s announcement before booking.
Costa Rica: Pacific beaches with a deliberate forest stop
Costa Rica is my choice here for combining a beach stay with time in the forest. February falls in the Pacific dry season. Guanacaste, including places such as Tamarindo and Nosara, is one coastal option; Manuel Antonio, near Quepos, offers another way to combine forest and beaches.
Choose between those coastal areas before adding more stops. For a park-and-coast holiday, Manuel Antonio is a useful starting point. Its beaches include Manuel Antonio and Espadilla Sur, and park admission is booked through the SINAC reservation system. Keep the booking confirmation and the identification associated with it available for your visit.
Arenal belongs to the inland Northern Plains. Adding Arenal means planning an inland leg; a short holiday may not have room for Guanacaste, Arenal and Manuel Antonio together. Choose the places you most want to spend time in before calculating transfers.
The Caribbean coast has a different rainfall pattern. It has no clearly defined dry season, although February and March are relatively drier. A Pacific dry-season recommendation is not a promise of the same conditions on the other coast, or of a rain-free visit anywhere in the country.
Maldives: a holiday built around the island stay
February sits within the Maldives’ January–March dry northeast monsoon. That makes it a good seasonal choice for an island holiday, though warm, humid conditions and occasional showers remain possible.
I would choose the Maldives when spending most of the holiday around the water and accommodation is the point of the trip. For a honeymoon or a couple’s break, that can be more appealing than repeatedly packing for the next stop. For a family, check that the particular accommodation has the activities and room arrangement everyone needs.
The useful price comparison is the full stay. Put meals and the transfer to the chosen island beside the room price before comparing it with Thailand or Costa Rica. A low nightly rate alone does not tell you which holiday costs less.
Vietnam: choose the region, then decide how Tet fits
For a warmer February trip in Vietnam, I would begin with Ho Chi Minh City and the Mekong Delta. February is within the south’s December–April dry season. Northern Vietnam offers a different experience: Hanoi and Ha Long can be cool and misty. Choose them for the places themselves, with clothes and expectations suited to those conditions.
Central Vietnam also needs a closer look. Hue can remain cool and rainy through February, while Hoi An enters its warmer, sunnier seasonal window during the month. Neither description is a daily forecast. Pick the cities you want to visit and pack for their regions; a single national temperature is little help.
Tet, Vietnamese Lunar New Year, begins on 6 February 2027. It can be a meaningful reason to travel, but it also changes the practical arrangements. Family travel increases demand for planes, trains, buses and rooms. Many businesses and restaurants close for the first few days; some cities can feel quieter even while transport is heavily booked.
If your dates overlap Tet, reserve essential intercity journeys and confirm meals and accommodation arrangements in advance. Services do not all close, and reopening dates vary between businesses. For a trip built around moving freely between several places, I would compare the holiday period with a later February departure before buying flights.
South Africa for Cape Town’s summer
Cape Town is the South African destination I would lead with in February. It is a hot summer month, usually with little rain, though wind can affect the day. The city may be somewhat quieter than in January, but February is still busy. Budget for your actual dates rather than an assumed off-season discount.
A safari in Kruger National Park needs separate weather planning. Its hot, rainy season runs broadly from October to March. The landscape is greener and vegetation denser, which can make animals harder to spot than in the dry winter. A February safari is still possible, but I would decide whether I want that wet-season experience before adding it to a Cape Town trip.
If easier wildlife spotting is the main reason for travelling, I would compare another season. If Cape Town in summer is the priority and a safari is an additional interest, I would plan the two parts with their separate conditions in mind.
Japan for snow and Sapporo’s festival
Japan would be my winter choice from this list. Hokkaido and mountain areas such as Nagano and Niigata offer snow-focused trips, while city sightseeing in Tokyo or Osaka does not come with a reliable promise of snow.
The Sapporo Snow Festival runs from 4 to 11 February 2027, with the main event spread across Odori, Tsudome and Susukino. For a festival trip, make Sapporo accommodation the first booking decision and follow the developing programme on the festival website. Those dates refer to the main festival, not every related winter event.
A skiing holiday needs a different base. Niseko, Rusutsu and Kiroro are Hokkaido options; Hakuba is in Nagano, on Honshu. Choose the ski area first, then work out how much city time fits around it. A Sapporo hotel is only one part of that decision.
February is a strong seasonal choice for snow sports, but a calendar month does not guarantee that every slope or lift will operate on your dates. Check the chosen resort’s conditions and operations near the trip. For a mixed group, separate the days people want on the slopes from the days they want in town before committing everyone to one base.
Two festival trips for the first part of February
Italy: Venice Carnival in a winter city
Venice Carnival runs from 23 January to 9 February 2027. I would choose this for the atmosphere and events of a winter city visit. It answers a different February wish from a warm beach holiday.
The exact week is decisive. A late-February booking will miss this edition, even though Carnival appears in plenty of general February destination lists. Check the Venice Carnival programme for your intended day as the new schedule is released; an older performance listing is not confirmation that the same event will return.
If a particular performance is the main attraction, establish its date and admission arrangements before arranging the rest of the trip. For a broader city visit, decide how much of the holiday you want to spend around Carnival.
United States: New Orleans around Mardi Gras
In New Orleans, Mardi Gras falls on Tuesday, 9 February 2027. The Carnival season begins on 6 January, and the parades and celebrations lead up to that final Tuesday. The preceding week is especially relevant when choosing a visitor’s dates; arriving after Mardi Gras will not produce the same trip.
I would choose the parade before the hotel. Different krewes, the organisations that put on parades, use different routes. Decide which one you want to see, then look at accommodation and how you will reach that route. For a family, choose the location around the parade experience everyone wants; a nightlife address may serve a different purpose.
Watching public parades is generally free. Paid viewing stands and some balls have separate costs or admission requirements, and some balls are invitation-only. A street-parade plan and a ticketed-event plan therefore need different budgets. Use the New Orleans Mardi Gras guide to check the relevant arrangements as the trip takes shape.
Peru needs a different February plan
I would be cautious about choosing Peru in February specifically for an Inca Trail trek. The Andes have their wetter season from November to March, and the Inca Trail network normally closes each February for maintenance and conservation. If the classic trek is the main purpose of the holiday, I would choose another month and check the operating dates before booking.
That trail closure is separate from access to the Machu Picchu citadel. A non-trekking visit can use the railway to Machu Picchu Pueblo, also called Aguas Calientes, followed by a bus towards the citadel. Site admission, train and bus each need their own arrangements. A train reservation does not include permission to enter the archaeological site.
For fixed February dates, I would check the actual citadel entry options through the official ticket portal, then coordinate transport around the entry booking. Rain and current access conditions still matter. Do not treat an annual closure pattern as a guarantee of any particular day’s access or a confirmed reopening date for the following year.
Peru can therefore remain a possibility for a traveller willing to plan a wet-season citadel visit. It should not be an unqualified February recommendation for someone expecting to walk the classic Inca Trail.
Book around the February you actually have
For fixed dates, I would first cross off experiences that fall outside them. In 2027, the final week of February will miss the main Sapporo Snow Festival, Venice Carnival and Mardi Gras. In Vietnam, the beginning of the month overlaps Tet. Those are different booking decisions from choosing a destination for its usual climate.
Next, compare a complete version of each trip on the same dates: flights from your own departure airport, accommodation, local transport and the activities you intend to do. Include meals and island transfers where they materially change the total. There is no useful worldwide “cheapest February country” answer without that route and budget.
For a couple, decide between time together in one place and a trip built around events or sightseeing. For a family or mixed group, agree on the activities before choosing the accommodation base.
