Cinemas in Chiang Mai: English Movies, IMAX and Finding Showtimes

Updated September 2026

For a movie in Chiang Mai, start with three multiplexes: SFX Cinema at MAYA, Major Cineplex at Central Chiangmai, and Major Cineplex at Central Chiangmai Airport. English-language screenings are available, but the language belongs to the individual session. A Hollywood title on the poster does not guarantee English dialogue.

I would choose the film, language and time before choosing the nearest mall. A short ride to the wrong version wastes more of the evening than a slightly longer trip to the right screening. If several cinemas have a suitable session, location becomes the useful deciding factor.

Which cinema makes sense from your part of town?

SFX Cinema at MAYA: convenient for Nimman

SFX is on the fifth floor of MAYA Lifestyle Shopping Center, at the Huay Kaew Road end of Nimmanhaemin Road. It is the natural first place to check if you are staying around Nimman, One Nimman or the nearby section of Huay Kaew.

Use the SF Cinema website or app and select SFX Cinema MAYA Chiang Mai. Check the date before comparing the sessions: a film listed in the app may be playing somewhere else in Thailand or on another day.

I would pair this cinema with dinner around Nimman rather than travel across town purely for a standard screening. The MAYA shopping-center guide is useful if you want to spend time in the mall before the film. For booking help, SF’s Thai short-code contact is 1349.

Major Cineplex Central Chiangmai: the IMAX option

This is the mall still widely called Central Festival, in the Fa Ham area on the northeastern side of the city. The cinema is on the fifth floor. Search for Major CentralFestival Chiangmai in Major’s cinema selector; the older mall name remains useful for finding the correct branch.

The complex has an IMAX with Laser screen as well as other auditoriums. If the large-screen format is the reason for your trip, choose a session explicitly marked IMAX. A ticket for an ordinary auditorium in the same complex does not include that format, and an IMAX screening is not necessarily 3D.

A Kids Cinema is also available for designated sessions, with family-oriented facilities. Confirm the day’s programme and access arrangements rather than assuming every children’s film uses that auditorium. The branch contact is 053 288 852, or +66 53 288 852.

Major Cineplex Central Chiangmai Airport: useful for the south side

This branch is in Central Chiangmai Airport, often called Central Airport Plaza. It is a sensible option from the southern side of the Old City, Hai Ya and the airport area when the right session is available. The cinema is on the mall’s fourth floor.

Select Major Chiangmai Airport in the booking system. Be careful with the similar Central names: this mall and Central Festival are separate destinations on different sides of the city. The branch number is 053 283 939, or +66 53 283 939.

The mall is near the airport, but it is not inside the terminal. I would only use a film to fill time before a flight after allowing for the full running time, the journey back and check-in. The Airport Plaza guide covers the mall for anyone combining the visit with shopping.

How to check English audio and subtitles

Read the language details beside the exact showtime, not just the movie title. The same film can have an original-language screening and a Thai-dubbed screening in the same building.

  • English audio with Thai subtitles is suitable if you want to hear the English dialogue. A common notation is EN/TH.
  • Thai audio with English subtitles lets an English reader follow a Thai-language film. This may appear as TH/EN.
  • Thai audio without subtitles may appear as TH/–. An English movie title does not change that.
  • Other original languages need a separate subtitle check. Japanese or Korean audio does not automatically come with English text.

Labels differ between apps and screens, so open the session details when an abbreviation is unclear. In a listing that separates “Sound” and “Subtitles,” read both fields. “Soundtrack” can mean original audio, which could be French, Japanese or another language.

At the counter, I would show the selected session and ask, “Is this one in English?” For a Thai or other non-English film, ask specifically, “Does this screening have English subtitles?” Those are different questions.

Finding today’s films without relying on an old timetable

Use Major Cineplex for the two Central branches and SF Cinema for MAYA. Their booking systems let you select the branch, date and session before choosing seats. Search results and saved screenshots can retain yesterday’s times, so finish the decision inside the cinema’s current schedule.

  1. Select the branch and date. Check that you are viewing Chiang Mai, and distinguish Central Festival from Central Airport.
  2. Open the film’s sessions. Confirm audio, subtitles and format for the time you want.
  3. Check the seat plan and total. Different rows, seat classes and auditoriums may have different prices.
  4. Complete the booking. Keep the confirmation or ticket code and read the collection or entry instructions.
  5. Plan arrival and departure. Allow time to reach the cinema floor, buy refreshments and find the correct auditorium.

If a later date has no sessions yet, that does not necessarily mean the cinema is closed or the film will not play. Try again nearer the date or ask the branch. Special screenings and festivals may use different booking arrangements from the regular programme.

Ticket prices and choosing a seat

There is no single Chiang Mai cinema ticket price. The film, day, auditorium, seat type and promotion can all affect the total. For an ordinary screening, use the standard seats as your starting comparison; then decide whether a larger screen or a recliner is worth the extra cost to you.

Compare the price shown after selecting the actual seat. An advertised starting price may require a membership, a particular payment card or a limited session. Wednesday promotions can be useful, but check their eligibility and exclusions before arranging the whole day around a discount.

I would usually choose a seat near the middle of the auditorium for a straightforward view of the screen and subtitles. For a couple, check whether a paired or “honeymoon” seat is priced per person or per pair. If you need wheelchair access or space for a companion, ask the branch about the specific auditorium before paying.

IMAX, 3D, moving-seat formats and premium seating are separate choices. Read the session label instead of treating every upgrade as the same experience. With children, check the language and film rating before getting distracted by the seat package.

Getting home after a late screening

For Nimman, MAYA may be close enough to walk from your accommodation, but check the actual road crossings and hotel entrance. From the Old City, compare the journey to all three malls once you have a suitable film time. Traffic around a mall can matter more than the distance on the map.

After a late show, the normal shopping entrances or escalators may no longer be available. Ask cinema staff which exit leads to your parking area or pickup point. Confirm that the driver is coming to the right mall and entrance; “Central” alone is not a clear destination in Chiang Mai.

Bring a light layer if air-conditioning bothers you, silence your phone and leave time for the cinema’s pre-film programme. The printed film running time is not a reliable measure of the whole outing, especially when you also need to leave the mall and find your ride.

What happened to Promenada and Vista?

SF Cinema at Promenada is not a current option. Promenada closed in 2022. The old Vista cinema at Kad Suan Kaew is also closed; it should not be treated as an operating independent cinema in Nimman.

For a regular movie outing, I would start with MAYA for Nimman, Central Festival for a specifically booked IMAX session, or Central Airport for the south side of town. Once you have the right branch, the final choice is the session with the audio, subtitles and timing you actually want.
