Updated October 2026
Bali and Malaysia’s east-coast islands are strong choices for an August beach holiday. Switzerland and the Canadian Rockies suit a trip built around mountains and lakes. For performances and city life, look at Edinburgh or Amsterdam; for wildlife, the Maasai Mara in Kenya. New Zealand suits a winter holiday with time on the ski slopes.
Choose a region as well as a country. Japan can mean a hot city festival or an outdoor trip in Hokkaido. In Mauritius, a sheltered beach and a windy kitesurfing coast suit quite different holidays.
Beach holidays: Bali and Malaysia
Indonesia: combine Bali’s beaches with Ubud
August falls within Bali’s usual dry season, making it a good month for a beach stay with temple visits, rice-field walks and time inland. Rain is still possible, and the same seasonal advice does not apply to every island in Indonesia.
For a relaxed beach base, I prefer Sanur for its waterfront promenade and generally calmer water. Walking between the beach and places to eat makes the day easier with children. Check the tide, beach flags and conditions before swimming, even on this more sheltered coast.
Uluwatu makes more sense when surfing and cliff-top scenery are the priority. Ubud adds a different part of Bali, with temples, craft shops and countryside outings. Split the stay between an inland base and one beach area instead of spending each day driving across the island.
August is a popular holiday month. Book the room type you need and allow for traffic when arranging transfers, especially on the day of the flight home.
Malaysia: food cities and the peninsula’s east-coast islands
The Perhentian Islands and Redang are useful August options for swimming, snorkelling and a stay centred on the beach. They sit off the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia, where the main visiting season differs from the northeast monsoon period later in the year. August is within the usual island season, although showers and rough-sea warnings can still affect a boat trip.
Malaysia is my choice here for a holiday built around food with a beach stay added. Start with hawker meals, old streets and cafés in George Town, Penang, or choose Kuala Lumpur for a larger-city stay. Allow a separate travel day for the flight or overland transfer from either city to an east-coast island.
For the Perhentians, check the connection to Kuala Besut and the onward boat with the accommodation before fixing an arrival flight. Confirm which beach the boat reaches, whether transfers are included and how the return connects with the mainland journey.
Malaysia’s National Day falls on 31 August. Check that year’s programme and local transport arrangements if the trip includes celebrations.
Summer mountains: Switzerland and Canada
Switzerland: lakes, mountain railways and a manageable route
Switzerland is a strong August choice when the aim is mountain scenery without driving throughout the holiday. A stay in Lucerne can combine the old town and lake with an excursion towards Rigi or Pilatus. Add a second base in the Bernese Oberland if walks and mountain villages are the main attraction.
This works better than trying to include Lucerne, Interlaken, Zermatt and every famous panoramic train in a short visit. Staying longer in one region also leaves a choice of days for the mountain outing. If the peaks disappear into cloud, use a lower-level walk, a lake trip or time in town instead.
August is summer, but a warm afternoon by the lake says little about conditions at the top of a mountain. Carry a warm layer and waterproofs, check the route and lift status, and change plans when storms are forecast. A cable-car viewpoint and a demanding mountain hike need very different preparation.
Price the mountain journeys separately when comparing transport passes. The Swiss Travel Pass does not make every cable car and summit railway free, and some panoramic trains require a separate reservation. Swiss National Day is on 1 August, so check local celebrations and opening arrangements if the holiday falls at the start of the month.
Canada: concentrate on Banff and the surrounding Rockies
For a first summer mountain trip in Canada, Banff and the Lake Louise area provide a coherent starting point. August suits lake visits, scenic drives and walks chosen for the group’s ability. Keep this as a regional holiday rather than adding Vancouver, Toronto and Niagara Falls to the same short itinerary.
Arrange transport to the famous lakes before finalising the driving itinerary. Moraine Lake Road is closed to ordinary personal-vehicle access. Most visitors need a reserved shuttle or an authorised commercial service; registered Moraine Lake Lodge guests have separate arrangements. Lake Louise has limited parking, so a transport reservation is useful there too.
Use the Lake Louise and Moraine Lake transport page to choose the service for your travel year. Check the departure point and last return as well as the ticket. A park admission arrangement and a shuttle booking are separate things.
Wildfire smoke can arrive from fires far beyond the immediate area and affect both visibility and outdoor plans. Keep track of park alerts and local air quality, and leave flexibility for closures or a change of base.
Japan: Hokkaido for an outdoor trip, Tohoku for festivals
Hokkaido is a good August option for travellers who want food, countryside and outdoor time without making Tokyo or Kyoto the centre of a midsummer itinerary. Sapporo and nearby Otaru give the trip a city base; Furano and Biei add agricultural landscapes and flower fields. Stay near the countryside stops if they are the main reason for going, rather than repeatedly covering the distance from Sapporo.
Do not book an August trip solely for photographs of peak lavender. At Farm Tomita, the Traditional Lavender Field normally flowers from late June to late July, while later-blooming lavandin can extend into August. Other flowers keep the gardens interesting, but the display changes. Check the field calendar for the part of the month you plan to visit.
Hokkaido can also be hot, with summer days exceeding 30°C. Bring sun protection as well as a layer for cooler evenings.
For festivals, look at Tohoku’s early-August events, including Aomori’s Nebuta Matsuri. Choose the event and its confirmed programme first, then book the accommodation and onward transport around it.
Obon, commonly observed around 13–16 August, increases domestic travel demand. Reserve important train, bus and flight connections. August is also within Japan’s typhoon season, so allow some flexibility for weather disruption.
August city breaks: Edinburgh and Amsterdam
United Kingdom: Edinburgh for the Fringe
Edinburgh is the clear August choice in Scotland when theatre, comedy, music and live performance are the point of the holiday. The next Edinburgh Festival Fringe runs from 6–30 August 2027. The city’s venues and streets become part of the experience, with ticketed shows, free performances and plenty to discover between bookings.
Price accommodation near the venues before committing to flights. For a room farther out, check how to get back after the last evening performance; a convenient daytime connection may not suit the end of the show.
Leave gaps between performances. Venues can have several spaces, queues take time, and walking through a busy festival city is slower than drawing a route on a map. The Fringe programme and venue planner help turn a list of shows into a workable day.
Add countryside time only if there is room for it in the trip. An Edinburgh festival stay and a tour of the Highlands or islands are both worthwhile, but they compete for travel days. Pack a waterproof layer even for the city portion.
Netherlands: Amsterdam’s museums and summer concerts
Amsterdam suits travellers who want a compact cultural trip with an indoor alternative when the weather changes. Combine a museum visit with walks along the canals and an evening performance. The August Grachtenfestival adds concerts in varied settings, including gardens, churches and venues around the city.
Check the Grachtenfestival programme before choosing dates around a particular concert. Pride events can also affect the atmosphere and accommodation demand, but their schedules need checking for the intended year.
Utrecht is an option for a separate canal-city day if the stay is long enough. There is no need to change hotels repeatedly to make a Netherlands trip varied. August still brings busy sights and changeable weather, so secure any essential museum booking and keep the rest of the day flexible.
Kenya: allow time for the Maasai Mara
August falls within the Maasai Mara’s usual July–October migration window. The herds move through the wider Mara–Serengeti ecosystem in response to conditions. Their location and the timing of river crossings vary, so a crossing cannot be guaranteed for a particular day.
Allow several game drives instead of building the entire holiday around one hoped-for crossing. A safari can be rewarding through predators, other wildlife and the landscape even when that particular scene does not happen.
Compare complete safari quotes. Ask whether the price covers park or conservancy entry, the guide, vehicle, meals and transfers from Nairobi or the arrival airstrip. Establish where the camp is and where the drives take place. A lower nightly rate can mean a different location or important costs paid separately.
Confirm the camp and transport before adding other parts of Kenya.
New Zealand: a winter holiday around Queenstown or Wānaka
August is winter in New Zealand. Queenstown and Wānaka are useful bases for a holiday centred on skiing, snowboarding and mountain scenery, with lakefront time and places to eat on days away from the slopes.
Check ski-field transport when choosing accommodation. A room in town does not include a lift pass, equipment, lessons or a mountain shuttle unless the booking explicitly says so. For beginners, the availability of lessons and suitable rental equipment matters more than trying a different ski field every day.
Snow, wind and road conditions can change the day’s plan. Use the ski area’s operating report before setting off, and arrange suitable transport if driving on icy roads is unfamiliar. For a rental car, confirm winter equipment and chain requirements with the operator.
Pack thermal layers, a warm jacket and waterproofs. Keep driving stages modest in the shorter daylight hours, and do not transfer a summer hiking itinerary unchanged into August.
Mauritius: choose the coast for a mild winter break
Mauritius belongs on an August shortlist for travellers who like a milder beach holiday, walks and time outdoors. It is winter on the island, with cooler evenings and more wind than the image of a hot tropical beach may suggest.
For a relaxed beach stay, look closely at the west coast, which is generally more sheltered from the prevailing winter wind. If kitesurfing is the reason for the trip, the wind around Le Morne can be an advantage instead. The east and south coasts can feel quite different from a sheltered western beach.
Ask about the actual beach exposure and whether the pool is heated if comfortable daily swimming is essential. Bring a layer for evenings and inland outings. August can work well here, but it is a poor match for someone whose main requirement is the hottest sea and still air all day.
Thailand: choose the coast and allow for rain
For a beach holiday, consider Koh Samui, Koh Phangan or Koh Tao before defaulting to Phuket or Krabi. These islands have a different rainfall pattern from the Andaman coast, although rain and rough seas remain possible.
Chiang Mai also works for food, cafés, temples and a city stay with flexible outings. August is within the northern rainy season, so a schedule that depends on a particular mountain view or trail every day is more vulnerable to the weather.
The Thailand rainy-season guide explains the regional differences and how to plan around them.
Check the whole trip before choosing the cheapest flight
There is no single cheapest August country for every traveller. Departure airport, school-holiday dates, room requirements and internal transport can change the comparison. Price a realistic stay on the same dates in each destination, including airport transfers and the activities that made you choose it.
For a shorter holiday, a single region usually gives more usable time than a multi-country route. Families can benefit from a beach or city base with meals and ordinary activities nearby; a remote lodge or island introduces additional transfers even when the room itself looks affordable.
Book the part of the trip that has limited availability: an Edinburgh room, a Mara safari, transport to Moraine Lake, a ski lesson or the room-and-boat combination on an island. Then fit the remaining itinerary around it. Before paying, check entry and transit requirements for each traveller’s passport and confirm event dates for the correct year.
