My starting point for a Thailand trip is Bangkok, one northern base and one beach area. That combination gives a first visit real variety: a large river city, northern food and temples, then time by the sea. Whether all three belong in your trip depends on the number of nights you have and the month you travel. With a short holiday, I would drop a region before turning every other day into a transfer.
The useful question is where to sleep. Ayutthaya can fit into a Bangkok stay; Chiang Rai deserves a different decision. Phuket and Krabi are alternative beach bases, while Maya Bay is a restricted visitor attraction. Treating all these names as equivalent stops produces a crowded route.
Bangkok: the most useful starting point for a varied trip
Choose Bangkok for royal temples, neighbourhood food, river transport, shopping and museums. A day around the Grand Palace and Wat Pho feels very different from an evening in Yaowarat or a contemporary art stop. There is enough variety here to keep your plans useful when heat or rain makes another outdoor afternoon unappealing.
Hotel location matters more than the number of landmarks on your list. A base near a BTS or MRT station suits a trip spread across the city. A riverside or old-town stay makes more sense when the palace, temples and river are your main interests. Check the actual walk to the station or pier; a hotel describing itself as central can still leave you dependent on road traffic.
I would keep Bangkok in a first itinerary unless the purpose of the holiday is specifically a beach stay. It adds something that another southern resort town cannot. Allow for both of the city’s airports when booking onward flights: Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang are separate airports, and a change between them is a ground transfer.
Chiang Mai or Chiang Rai?
Chiang Mai is my choice for a northern base with several different kinds of day. The Old City has temples within a compact central area, while northern dishes such as khao soi and sai ua give meals a character distinct from Bangkok. Doi Suthep provides a mountain-temple excursion without changing hotels. Doi Inthanon is a separate national-park day, with a longer road journey and weather that can differ from the city.
Choose an Old City base for temple walks and easy returns to your room between outings. Nimman suits a stronger interest in cafés, restaurants and contemporary city life. Neither location puts you next to every mountain attraction, so compare a hotel’s immediate surroundings before treating the whole province as one neighbourhood.
Chiang Rai makes more sense when the White Temple, Blue Temple, Baan Dam and trips towards Chiang Saen are priorities. Those places are spread out. A return excursion from Chiang Mai spends a substantial part of the day on the road and leaves less room for the individual stops. Season can change this choice. Northern smoke is a recurring problem towards the end of the dry season, particularly in March and April; February can also be affected. Clear mountain views are not something to promise for those months. Check current air quality before committing to a trip whose main purpose is hiking or scenery. Cooler months and the greener rainy season offer different advantages, with rain affecting access and outdoor plans.
Choose a beach base before choosing boat excursions
The beach you sleep beside has more influence on an ordinary holiday day than the famous island you visit once. Check whether you can walk to food, whether the room is actually on the beach and how you will get back after dinner. A cheaper hillside hotel can become a less convenient choice if every outing needs a vehicle.
Phuket for choice and a broad range of facilities
Phuket suits travellers who want a large selection of hotels, restaurants and activities on one island. The trade-off is distance: a beach hotel, Phuket Old Town and a boat departure point may be in different parts of the island.
Patong is the choice to consider when nightlife is a central part of the trip. For a holiday organised around the beach and quieter evenings, compare other areas before booking there simply because the name is familiar. Krabi for limestone scenery and trips from Ao Nang
Krabi is a province, not a single beach. Ao Nang is a practical base when you want restaurants and excursion departures close together. Krabi Town is a different setting, with a town and river focus rather than a beachfront holiday.
Railay offers beaches below limestone cliffs and a climbing scene, but arrival involves a boat. That matters with luggage, a late flight or a hotel transfer. Railay East and Railay West also have different shorelines: the eastern side has mangroves and is not the swimming beach that many visitors picture. I would choose Railay for the setting and accept the boat logistics; Ao Nang is easier when flexible road access matters more.
Koh Samui for a Gulf island stay
Samui is an alternative to the Andaman coast, especially when the seasonal pattern favours the Gulf. It has its own airport, but compare the full fare with mainland arrival options before assuming the cheapest flight gives the cheapest journey. A mainland flight adds road and ferry connections.
Choose the beach area around the holiday you actually want. A lively evening district and a quiet resort frontage are different purchases even on the same island. Koh Phangan or Koh Tao can be onward destinations, but every island change adds a ferry and another check-in. There is no need to include all three to justify travelling to the Gulf.
Where Phi Phi and Maya Bay fit
Phi Phi belongs in the plan if staying on the islands is itself a priority. It can also be an excursion from an established southern base. Compare the actual boat route and time ashore before booking a tour with a long list of named stops.
Maya Bay is not a place to plan a swimming day. Swimming in the bay is prohibited, visitor access is controlled and seasonal closures apply. Check that it will be open on your travel date. Any swimming or snorkelling included in a wider Phi Phi tour takes place at other permitted stops, subject to conditions.
Match the coast to the month
Thailand does not have one beach season. The Andaman side, including Phuket and Krabi, generally has its more favourable beach period around November to April. During the southwest monsoon, rain and rough seas can interfere with boat trips even when a hotel remains open.
Samui and its neighbouring Gulf islands follow a different pattern. Their wetter period extends into the later part of the year, with October and November deserving particular attention. The Gulf can be a useful alternative during the Andaman’s wetter months, but it is not a guarantee of dry weather or calm crossings.
My preference for a weather-sensitive trip is a base that still works when an excursion is cancelled: places to eat nearby, something to do on land and enough flexibility to move the boat day. The Thailand rainy-season guide goes further into the regional differences.
Ayutthaya, Sukhothai and Khao Sok: additions with a clear purpose
Ayutthaya fits a Bangkok-based history trip. Its ruined temples belong to a former capital of Siam, and the historic city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It can be a day excursion without another hotel move. Stay overnight if you want a less compressed visit or several groups of ruins rather than a selection of major sights.
Sukhothai deserves its own stop when early Thai history is a main interest. The historical park is separate from the modern town, so choose accommodation around how you intend to visit it. Its monuments and landscaped grounds make a different experience from Bangkok’s active royal temples. I would add Sukhothai to a history-focused journey rather than insert it into an already full city-and-beach holiday merely to collect another name.
Khao Sok adds a forest or lake stay to a southern route. First decide which one you mean. Accommodation around Khao Sok village and the national-park entrance is different from a floating stay on Cheow Lan Lake. The lake journey uses Ratchaprapha Pier and then a boat; a bus ticket to Khao Sok village does not deliver you to a floating resort.
For a lake booking, establish the pier meeting time, road transfer, boat transfer and included activities before arranging the preceding night. This is an appealing addition when you want to spend part of the holiday in that setting. It is a poor fit as a rushed detour squeezed between two fixed flights.
Put the places into a route you can use
With one week, I would normally choose Bangkok and either the north or a beach area. The reason is practical: adding the third region introduces another airport journey and hotel change, leaving fewer complete days in the places you chose. A beach-focused holiday can use the whole week in one southern base.
For a two-week trip that includes cities and coast, an example is three nights in Bangkok, four in Chiang Mai, six in one beach area and a final night in Bangkok before an international departure there. The Bangkok stay allows an old-town day and a different neighbourhood or museum day; Chiang Mai can combine the city with a mountain outing; the beach stay leaves room for an excursion and unscheduled days. This is an example allocation, not a claim that every destination needs that exact stay.
The final Bangkok night is a deliberate buffer when the international flight departs from there, particularly after a journey involving a ferry or separate tickets. If you can fly home from the south, a return to Bangkok may be unnecessary. Check the available flights before fixing the order of the hotels.
For a history-led trip, replace the beach portion with Ayutthaya and Sukhothai. For a northern trip, give Chiang Rai its own stay. For a southern nature trip, combine one coast with Khao Sok and account for the pier connection. These choices produce more time for the things you care about than adding every destination to the same route.
Before booking, write down each hotel-to-hotel journey, including the airport or pier at both ends. Mark the days that involve moving. If most of your best weather hours are already assigned to transport, remove a stop. The destination left out is often what makes the remaining trip work.
