A fishing park near Chiang Mai can mean a rod hired for a few hundred baht or an organised outing with tackle, a guide, lunch and hotel transport. That distinction matters more than the photographs of enormous fish. My starting point is Bo Sang for anglers comfortable managing their own tackle, and an assisted package at Bo Sang or Go Bee for anyone learning to fish or arriving without equipment.
These are stocked freshwater lakes with facilities beside the water. Choose one for an accessible fishing session from the city, with staff and equipment available. A boat trip on a reservoir is a different outing and needs a separate booking.
Bo Sang: independent fishing or a package with help
Bo Sang Fishing Park, also written Bosang or Borsang, is east of Chiang Mai in the San Kamphaeng area. Its large lake holds Mekong giant catfish, carp and other freshwater species. The attraction is the opportunity to fish for substantial freshwater fish without bringing specialist equipment to Thailand. A photograph or a stock list cannot tell you what will take your bait on a particular day.
For a session starting at 9am, the rod-hire rate is 500 baht per rod, including two large bags of bait. There is a separate 2,000-baht rod deposit, with loss or damage affecting its return. Bringing your own rod reduces the corresponding fishing fee to 300 baht, also with bait included. Later starts have lower rates, but check the available fishing time before choosing one simply because it costs less.
Ordinary rod hire does not include a fishing assistant. That is the point I would settle before paying. Someone who can cast, manage a reel and handle the tackle may be happy with a rental. A beginner expecting someone to prepare every bait, explain the rig and help throughout the session should book assistance explicitly.
The full-day assisted package costs 1,700 baht without transport or 2,000 baht with the shuttle. It includes tackle, bait, a shared fishing trainer, lunch and water, with fishing scheduled roughly from 9am to 4:30pm. Shared assistance means the trainer is not necessarily beside one angler throughout the day. Ask about the arrangement if a child or inexperienced adult needs close supervision.
Bo Sang’s regular opening hours are Monday to Saturday, 9am–7pm. Confirm the operating day and finish time for your booking, particularly for late sessions or a Sunday request. The restaurant and Coffee Fish café give companions somewhere to eat or sit, although a person joining a shuttle may still incur a charge. Have the park quote for the whole party, including children and anyone who will not fish.
Go Bee: guided sessions with the main costs included
Go Bee Fishing Park is in the Nong Khwai area of Hang Dong, southwest of the city. Its half-day package costs 1,600 baht per angler, with sessions from 9am to 1pm or 1pm to 5pm. The full day runs from 9am to 5pm and costs 2,500 baht.
Those packages include one rod, bait, tackle, guiding, a meal, soft drinks and hotel transfers within the pickup area. The transfer coverage extends up to 15 kilometres from the pond; send your accommodation location before treating transport as included. Alcohol and any agreed extras are separate.
I find the half-day package the more sensible starting point for a visitor who is curious about fishing but unsure about spending a whole day at the lake. It provides a defined session and help with unfamiliar equipment. An experienced angler who wants more time with rods in the water has a clearer reason to choose the full day.
Reserve before travelling. Go Bee requires full advance payment for these packages, so obtain the confirmed date, pickup arrangement, total payable and cancellation terms before sending money. Non-fishing companions cost 650 baht each, including a meal and water. That changes the cost of a family outing considerably; count the spectators as well as the anglers when comparing options.
Lakeside accommodation is also available, but a bungalow booking and a fishing package are separate purchases. Do not assume that a room gives unrestricted overnight fishing or includes transport.
Booking through a fishing guide
A guide can arrange a visit to a park that also accepts direct bookings. Dreamlake, for example, offers guided fishing at Bo Sang. A tour name therefore does not necessarily identify a different lake.
Before comparing two offers, establish where each actually fishes, how much time is spent there, whether the guide is shared, and what happens if the intended venue is unavailable. A higher tour price can make sense when it buys individual instruction or a useful hotel transfer. It is harder to judge when the quotation gives only the name of a species and a promise of a memorable day.
What happens to the fish?
At Go Bee, the prime species must be returned alive and unharmed. Bo Sang allows some scaled fish to be taken home, while other fish must be released. Ask staff to identify a catch and explain the rule before assuming you can keep it. Paying to fish is not blanket permission to take away everything caught.
Have staff help land and unhook large fish. Support the body during any photograph, keep fingers out of the gills and return the fish gently. Prepare the camera beforehand so handling stays brief. A beginner does not need to prove independence by lifting an unfamiliar fish without assistance.
The same practical approach applies to bait and rigs. Start with the park’s supplied setup and instruction. If you want to use lures, fly-fishing equipment, live bait or your own hooks, get permission for that method before bringing it. Rules and suitable tackle differ between fisheries.
Planning the outing from Chiang Mai
Bo Sang and Go Bee are on different sides of the city. Choose the session first, then arrange travel to that specific lake. A package shuttle removes the need to organise the return journey; an independent booking needs a driver, taxi arrangement or your own transport. Send the actual park location rather than asking for “the fishing park,” and agree the return pickup before fishing starts.
At the bank, shade, drinking water, a hat and footwear that grips wet ground matter more than a bag of unfamiliar tackle. Keep children away from casting hooks and within an adult’s supervision beside the water, even when a fishing assistant is present. If thunder develops, stop fishing and follow staff directions to shelter; a booked session is no reason to remain exposed beside a lake.
For my money, the best choice comes down to the help you need. Bo Sang’s basic rental offers a relatively inexpensive route for someone who can already fish. Its assisted package adds instruction and an optional shuttle. Go Bee makes a half-day outing straightforward to price, provided you include companions and confirm the pickup area. Choose that arrangement first, and treat the size of any fish you catch as an outcome rather than something the ticket buys.
