For a bottle of water, a quick meal or forgotten toothpaste in Chiang Mai, start with the nearest 7-Eleven, Lotus’s Go Fresh, Big C Mini or Tops Daily. These are useful for small purchases; the best choice is usually the branch you can reach easily from your accommodation.
I would find that branch on the first evening, particularly before an early excursion. Buying breakfast and water on the way back to your room is easier than searching for an open shop while a driver is waiting outside.
Finding a shop near your hotel
Use your accommodation’s actual entrance as the starting point in a map search. “Chiang Mai” covers much more than the central visitor neighbourhoods, and the nearest result by distance may be across a busy road or on the other side of the moat.
In the Old City and around Tha Phae, check the walking route and the available crossings. Around Nimman and the Huay Kaew junction, a shop on your side of the main road may be the easier choice. Along Chang Khlan, use your hotel’s exact location rather than the broad Night Bazaar label. These small route decisions matter more when you are carrying water or walking in rain.
Many 7-Eleven branches operate around the clock, but opening hours belong to the individual branch. A shop inside a larger building can have different access from a street-front store. Check the branch listing and door signs before relying on a late-night or early-morning visit.
If you cannot find a useful result, ask your accommodation for the nearest open convenience store. A small neighbourhood shop may cover a simple purchase without requiring a longer walk to a familiar chain.
Which chain suits the errand?
7-Eleven for a quick meal and travel basics
7-Eleven is the obvious starting point for packaged snacks, chilled drinks, ready meals, bread and small personal-care items. Look for the meal-heating service if you want to eat straight away. Coffee counters and other services vary by branch.
I would use it for a small immediate purchase: breakfast before a pickup, an evening snack, tissues or a replacement toothbrush. For a particular brand, dietary requirement or larger household purchase, the nearest branch may have too limited a selection.
Lotus’s Go Fresh for a small grocery shop
Lotus’s Go Fresh is the current name to search when older advice points you towards Tesco Lotus Express. Its grocery emphasis makes it worth considering for ingredients and household supplies as well as snacks. Branches differ in size, so do not assume every Go Fresh has the range of a supermarket.
A local example of the larger format is Lotus’s Go Fresh Supermarket at The Backyard Mahidol, on Mahidol Road, opened in February 2026. It includes fresh food, ready-to-eat options and a bakery. I would consider it if I were already staying or travelling along that corridor; a cross-city trip makes little sense for a single drink.
Big C Mini for everyday supplies
Big C Mini, also called Mini Big C, is the smaller neighbourhood format of Big C. It is useful for drinks, packaged food and household essentials when there is a branch near your room.
Check the format in your map result. A full Big C supermarket or hypermarket is a different shopping trip, with a broader range and potentially a much longer journey. The chain name alone does not tell you the shop’s size or hours.
Tops Daily, the name that replaced FamilyMart
Thailand’s former FamilyMart stores were rebranded as Tops Daily in 2023. An old guide promising a FamilyMart near a Chiang Mai landmark may therefore send you searching under the wrong name.
Chiang Mai examples include Tops Daily Suan Dok Park and a branch at Bangchak San Klang intersection. Their product selections and services need to be checked individually. Tops Daily is also a separate format from Tops supermarkets and Tops Food Hall; a recommendation for one does not describe the other.
What I would buy on the first evening
Keep the first shop practical. Water for the room and the next morning, something you can eat before breakfast service, and any missing wash-bag items will cover most immediate needs. If you have forgotten something larger or more specialised, compare the options in your Thailand packing list before buying a substitute that does not suit the trip.
Small toiletry packs can be convenient for a short stay. For a longer stay, compare the price and quantity with a larger pack instead of assuming the smallest shelf price is the best value.
For chilled meals, distinguish food you want heated now from food you plan to refrigerate for later. Ask about heating before leaving the checkout. Do the same with a sandwich intended for toasting, and make sure you have any cutlery you need before walking back to your accommodation.
Read the package rather than judge ingredients from the picture. A vegetable-looking meal can still contain animal ingredients, and a drink’s flavour does not tell you its sugar content. If a dietary restriction or allergy matters, use a clearly labelled product you can assess; a quick counter conversation may not resolve an unclear ingredient list.
Paying without surprises
Carry some baht for small purchases. Chains offer cashless options, but the accepted card networks, minimum purchase, product exclusions and supported wallets can differ. Ask before adding items purely to reach a card-payment threshold.
A QR code at the till also does not guarantee that your usual overseas banking app can pay it. Use a payment method you have confirmed works, and keep cash as a fallback. Membership promotions can have separate conditions, so compare the ordinary shelf price with the offer available to you.
Check the amount and keep the receipt for a mobile top-up, bill payment or other service transaction. Such services may use a different payment process from the groceries in your basket.
SIM cards, top-ups and delivery
A phone-credit top-up and a new SIM card are different purchases. For a top-up, confirm the network, phone number and amount before payment. Stock and supported services vary, so a shop selling one network’s products may not handle what you need.
A new tourist SIM requires registration. Take your passport and phone, and check the plan’s data allowance, validity and activation procedure. If you need help with an eSIM, a registration problem or transferring service, I would go to the network’s own shop. A convenience-store cashier may have limited time or tools for troubleshooting.
7Delivery operates through the Thai 7-Eleven app, while grocery delivery is also available through other store and delivery services. Before relying on an order, check whether you can complete account setup, pay with an accepted method and select your actual address. Give clear building and entrance details; a hotel name alone can be ambiguous.
For one small purchase, the walk may be simpler. For several heavy bottles or a larger order, compare the final delivery total, including fees and any minimum spend, with the effort of carrying everything back.
Alcohol hours are separate from shop hours
As of September 2026, general permitted alcohol sales hours are 11am to midnight. The former 2pm–5pm interruption was removed from the regular schedule with the change effective on 29 May 2026. A 24-hour convenience store still cannot simply sell alcohol at any hour.
The minimum age is 20. Election periods, specified religious days and other official restrictions can interrupt normal sales, and a store at a petrol station can be subject to location restrictions. Follow the branch’s signs and staff instructions, and carry identification when purchasing.
When a different shop is worth the journey
For a week of groceries, cooking ingredients or a specific imported product, consider a full supermarket. Rimping, Tops, Lotus’s and Big C give you different options across Chiang Mai; the grocery-store guide explains how to narrow the choice.
For medicine or advice about a health concern, look for a pharmacy with a pharmacist available. A convenience store’s small shelf of personal-care products cannot replace that conversation.
My usual planning choice would be one nearby shop for urgent items, then a more deliberate grocery trip only if the stay calls for it. The useful convenience store is the one that solves the errand without taking over your afternoon.
