My recommendation for Songkran in Mae Sot is to build the trip around the city’s confirmed celebrations and treat a riverside boxing event as a separate booking decision. The name “Thai–Myanmar Friendship Songkran Festival and Thai Boxing” belongs to a real 2023 event on the Moei River. It does not establish a fight card, ring location or admission price for a future April.
Mae Sot offers a good reason to come for the New Year: community ceremonies, a cultural procession, water play and food shaped by the town’s Thai and Myanmar connections. In 2026, activities took place in the city and at a separate riverside celebration at Ban Mae Ku Luang. I would stay in Mae Sot itself, choose the event that matters most and arrange transport around that location.
What the friendship festival name means
Songkran in Thailand and Thingyan in Myanmar fall around the same New Year period. In Mae Sot, the connection has a physical setting: the Moei River separates the Thai side from Myawaddy in Myanmar. Communities on both sides have celebrated together, and older festival programmes have combined water play with boxing.
The 2023 friendship festival was scheduled for 13 April at the Moei riverside in Mae Sot. Earlier editions also included muay khat chueak, often written kard chuek, involving wrapped hands. That history explains why boxing appears in the festival’s name. It does not mean every Mae Sot Songkran celebration includes the same competition.
I treat the city festival, a gathering at a particular river access point and a boxing promotion as separate outings. Each needs its own venue and time, even when they fall on the same day.
The Mae Sot venues to keep separate
Central Mae Sot is the base I favour for a visit combining the city procession, meals and evening celebrations. The municipal programme in 2026 included activities outside Robinson Lifestyle Mae Sot and a procession from the district office towards the municipality. Those are city locations, separate from the Moei riverbank.
Ban Mae Ku Luang, บ้านแม่กุหลวง, was the setting for the two-country riverside gathering in April 2026. There were food stalls and music on both sides of the Moei, and residents joined water play under security supervision. Save that village name if a future event is announced there. “Take me to the river” leaves too much room for a driver to choose a different access point.
Rim Moei Market and the Thai–Myanmar Friendship Bridge are other familiar names around Mae Sot. Their presence on a map does not identify the location of a temporary stage or boxing ring. Older riverside programmes and newer celebrations can use different sites. Ask for the actual entrance pin before arranging a lift.
Tak town is another destination again, across the mountains beside the Ping River. A hotel listed under Tak province can be far from the Mae Sot event you want. I check the district name and map location before comparing room prices; for this trip, the accommodation needs to say Mae Sot.
What happened in 2026, and how to plan the next visit
The 2026 city programme placed the opening and Songkran pageant outside Robinson Lifestyle Mae Sot on 13 April, beginning at 5 pm. Concerts were scheduled there at 7 pm on 14 and 15 April. The Mueang Chot cultural procession followed on the morning of 16 April.
The procession included vehicles carrying Buddha images and Chao Pho Phawo, a locally revered guardian figure, with community groups presenting their cultural identities. People along the route could take part in bathing the sacred images. I find that a stronger reason to extend a stay than adding another afternoon of water fights: it gives the trip a specific local event to follow.
For a future April, use the new municipal programme to decide whether to stay through the procession. In 2026 it fell after the core 13–15 April holiday dates, so leaving automatically on the 15th would have missed it. The next year’s route, gathering time and traffic arrangements need fresh confirmation.
Ask the hotel to help identify two things on the programme: where spectators can stand and where a vehicle can collect them afterwards. The district office can be an assembly point while the procession continues along other streets. Booking a room near one end of the route is useful only if you understand which activity happens there.
Mae Sot also held an elders’ blessing ceremony on 13 April 2026, with participation from the municipality’s twenty communities. That part of the celebration is worth recognising even if you come mainly for the procession: the water is used in a respectful exchange with elders. Watch the hosts, wait for an invitation to join and keep splash play away from the ceremony.
If boxing is your main reason for coming
I would only make a boxing-led booking after seeing a current promotion for that year. As of September 2026, I have no confirmed next-edition fight card to recommend. The old festival name should not be turned into a promise that bouts run every afternoon from 13 to 15 April.
A useful announcement should settle the following before you pay for transport or seats:
- The date, ring location and spectator entrance.
- The promoter or organiser and a current contact.
- The advertised rules and whether it is a competition or demonstration.
- The first-bout time, separate from any opening ceremony.
- The admission price, seating arrangements and any booking conditions.
The nationality of the fighters does not tell you the rules. Check whether the promotion specifies Muay Thai, Myanmar lethwei or another format before deciding what to expect. The equipment, permitted techniques and bout format belong to that particular promotion.
For watching, I prefer a seat with a clear view and an easy exit over the closest possible place to the ropes. Keep the fighters’ and officials’ access clear, follow the organiser’s photography rules and arrange the ride back before the card begins. With children, a parade or cultural performance may be a better choice if they are uncomfortable watching contact sport.
Enjoying the border setting without crossing into Myanmar
My plan for this visit stays on the Thai side. A festival celebrating friendship between communities does not establish permission for a foreign visitor to cross the river or enter Myanmar. Follow the access rules for your own nationality and the specific event, even if residents are moving between the banks.
Conditions around the Myanmar border can change, so check current travel advice and local access instructions close to the visit. If organisers or authorities restrict a river approach, use the confirmed city programme instead. Keep to authorised public access points on the Thai side.
At the water-play areas, stay within the designated public space and follow staff directions. Keep splashing to people taking part, leave passing riders alone and protect your phone before entering the wet area. For a procession, let ceremonial vehicles and participants move through without crowding into their path for a photograph.
Food and a break from the water
A Burmese meal in town is part of the visit I recommend, even when the festival is the main attraction. Tea-leaf salad, often called laphet thoke, and Burmese-style samosas are useful dishes to recognise on a menu. The salad’s fermented leaves and crunchy additions make a good change from another plate of fried street snacks.
Borderline Tea Garden is one place to consider for Burmese food and tea; confirm its holiday opening before making a special journey. The wider town also has Burmese, Shan, Karen, Mon, Thai and Muslim food traditions. Choosing a meal in Mae Sot gives you a reason to explore beyond a temporary festival stage without making a trip across the border.
For a group, I prefer ordering several dishes to share so everybody can try something unfamiliar. Ask about the ingredients in sauces and salads if you avoid fish, meat or nuts. A sit-down meal also gives you a break from the festival crowds before the evening programme.
Transport, accommodation and a workable stay
Book your arrival for Mae Sot rather than stopping at Tak town and assuming the festival is nearby. If travelling overland from Tak, keep the mountain transfer separate from the evening’s activities. An arrival that leaves no room to reach the hotel, drop luggage and find the venue turns a festival day into a sequence of connections.
For the municipal events, I favour accommodation with easy access to central Mae Sot and a reliable ride to Robinson. For a confirmed river event, arrange both the outward and return trip to the named village or entrance. A driver who can take you out is not automatically available when the music or boxing finishes.
The practical room questions are about access and noise: can a vehicle reach the entrance during the celebrations, is there secure parking, and does the room face an event stage or busy road? Those answers matter more to me than choosing the lowest nightly price and then paying for repeated transfers.
Keep your final day tied to one location. If the procession is the priority, watch it and leave time to collect luggage afterwards. If a confirmed boxing card is the priority, avoid an onward departure that depends on its finishing exactly on schedule. Save the hotel address and return pickup point in Thai before going out.
