Khao Tok Road is my pick for joining Sukhothai’s town celebrations at Songkran: floral shirts, water play, a procession and music around the clock tower. The festival takes place in modern Sukhothai, beside the Yom River. It is a separate outing from the temples of Sukhothai Historical Park, roughly 13 km away.
For accommodation, I start with that choice. A room near the modern town centre makes an evening at the festival easier; a base by the historical park suits a trip built around the ruins, with transport arranged into town. In 2026, the Floral Shirt Songkran festival ran from 12 to 15 April. Use those dates as a record of that edition, then check the next programme before booking around a particular ceremony or concert.
Finding Khao Tok Road
Khao Tok Road is the festival name used for a stretch of central Sukhothai. The main landmark is the clock tower roundabout, วงเวียนหอนาฬิกา, in Sukhothai Thani Municipality. The festival street extends from the eastern approach to Phra Ruang Bridge, past the clock tower towards the municipal fresh-market junction.
For navigation, save “ถนนข้าวตอก สุโขทัย” and the clock tower together. That is more useful than searching for Songkran across the whole province, where events also take place in Si Satchanalai, Sawankhalok and the old city. Khao Tok Road in Sukhothai is also a different place from Bangkok’s Khao San Road.
Wat Thai Chumphon, sometimes written Wat Thai Chumpon and spelled วัดไทยชุมพล, is another location to recognise on the festival programme. In 2026 it hosted the sand-pagoda competition. The clock tower was the stage and street-celebration landmark, while the temple had its own activity. Choose a specific meeting point before joining the crowd; “somewhere on the Songkran road” will be hard to find.
The area can have temporary traffic controls during the festival. Ask your driver or hotel where vehicles can stop on that day and walk the final section. The usual drop-off point beside a landmark may be occupied by a stage, parade or gathering crowd.
What gives this festival its character
The floral shirt is the obvious way to join in. Bright Hawaiian-style prints have become part of Songkran dress across Thailand, and Sukhothai puts them in the name of this event. I like the idea because participation is easy: an ordinary loose shirt works, without needing to rent an elaborate costume.
The celebrations also have a local religious focus. The 2026 celebrations included a replica of Phra Mae Ya, a revered figure associated with Sukhothai, along with sacred images, a Songkran procession and performances by local women’s groups.
When a sacred image passes, allow people room to approach for the bathing ritual. The gentle use of water there has a different purpose from the splash play along the street. Put the water gun away, watch how participants take their turn and join only where the organisers invite people forward.
Sand-pagoda building is another activity worth fitting into the visit. At Wat Thai Chumphon, the 2026 competition was scheduled for the afternoon of 12 April. It is a useful option for somebody interested in making and decorating rather than spending the whole afternoon in a water fight. A competition may have registered teams, so ask before helping with a structure or handling its decorations.
Choosing a day and an activity
The 2026 programme spread different activities over four days. On 12 April, there was an early ceremony at the Phra Mae Ya Shrine, sand-pagoda building at Wat Thai Chumphon in the afternoon and pageants at the clock tower stage in the evening. The official opening and a Songkran procession followed on 13 April, with music continuing through the remaining festival days.
I would choose the temple activity or procession first, then leave the surrounding time for food and water play. Turning up only for the evening concert gives you a different visit. Check the activity times as well as the festival dates.
For the next edition, check the Sukhothai Thani Municipality programme for your chosen activity’s gathering time and location. A parade’s assembly point, the place where it passes spectators and the main stage can be different. Ask the hotel to help read the Thai announcement if the English calendar gives only a date and “Sukhothai.”
Families who want the floral-shirt atmosphere without committing to a loud evening can build the outing around a daytime ceremony or temple event. For a concert-led visit, settle the ride back before going out. An overnight stay leaves room for the evening programme without a rush through the crowd to an intercity departure.
Choosing a shirt for water play and temple visits
My choice is a loose floral shirt that stays comfortable when wet, with shorts or trousers suitable for walking. Check the fabric before buying: a thick shirt can become heavy, while a thin pale one may turn transparent. Try moving your arms before buying; a tight shirt will be uncomfortable once wet.
If the visit includes the temple or a ceremony, bring clothing that covers shoulders and knees. A shirt suitable for splashing outside does not necessarily solve the rest of the outfit. Keep a dry layer in a waterproof bag or leave it at your accommodation so you can change before sitting down for a meal or travelling onwards.
Keep the bag light: a waterproof phone pouch, a small amount of cash and drinking water. Footwear needs grip and a secure fit on wet pavement. A pair that slips off with every step becomes tiresome when you are trying to move through a crowd.
For photographs, ask people before making them the subject of a close portrait, especially during ceremonies. Give people space to pray, and keep water guns away from faces. Keep splash play to willing participants and leave passing riders and people carrying food alone.
A Sukhothai meal between activities
For a meal between activities, I recommend Sukhothai noodles. The local style often brings together pork, peanuts and roasted chilli with a sweet-sour broth. Look for the Thai name ก๋วยเตี๋ยวสุโขทัย on the menu.
Recipes and toppings differ between shops. Ask about chilli before the bowl is seasoned if you prefer it mild, and mention any peanut or pork restrictions when ordering.
For lunch, I prefer a seated place a little away from the busiest splash area. That gives you somewhere to put down your bag, eat without balancing a bowl and decide whether to return for water play or wait for the evening programme.
Staying in modern or old Sukhothai
Choose modern Sukhothai if Khao Tok Road is the main reason for the trip. The clock tower, riverside area and municipal events are here. When comparing rooms, ask about the walking route to the festival and stage noise, rather than relying on “central Sukhothai” in a listing.
A hotel close to the event can make changing wet clothes and returning for the evening straightforward. A room facing a busy stage area can also be noisy. For children or an early departure, I favour a quieter room with an easy approach over the closest available balcony.
Old Sukhothai, around the historical park, works better if the ruins are the main attraction and Songkran is one outing. The distance to the modern centre makes a return ride part of that plan. Confirm where you will be collected after the festival; do not assume the daytime transport you used to arrive will still be available after a concert.
When booking a bus, check its actual arrival stop and arrange the connection to the correct hotel area. For a self-drive visit, unload at the accommodation and ask about festival parking before driving towards the clock tower. I prefer to make one journey into the event area and then walk, rather than keep moving the car between activities.
Combining Songkran with the historical park
I prefer to keep the ruins and the street festival in separate parts of the day. Cycling around ancient temples and joining a crowded water festival require different clothes, belongings and transport decisions. A morning in the historical park followed by a hotel break and an evening in modern Sukhothai can work if the transfer is arranged.

Before leaving for Khao Tok Road, save the clock tower pin, the specific activity location and your return pickup point. If you plan to meet friends after splitting up, choose a visible landmark beyond the busiest crowd and agree on a time while everyone can still hear one another.
