Update: As of October 7, 2021, the storied Dusit Thani Hotel has unfortunately closed. It was demolished, and ideally a new hotel will soon take its place. This review will be preserved for historical reference, and we eagerly await the next installment.
Together with my brother and his Norwegian girlfriend, we spent three weeks in Mui Ne, Vietnam, and Angkor, Cambodia. Before our guests returned home, we planned to spend a few days in Bangkok. While in Mui Ne, we did a lot of exploring in search of cheap hotels in Bangkok.
We had heard of Hotwire.com, where one might find excellent bargains on five-star hotels provided they were willing to book without knowing the specific location. Hotwire’s drawback is that you can only choose the location of the hotel; you don’t see the hotel’s name; just its star rating and price are displayed.
We decided to try it out because we love experiences, so we typed in a Bangkok neighborhood and found a price we were satisfied with. and WHACK! We secured a room at the five-star Dusit Thani Hotel Bangkok! We were overjoyed!
After arriving from Siem Reap in Cambodia at Bangkok’s Don Muang Airport extremely late in the evening, we immediately hopped in a cab. The cab trip to the Dusit Thani Hotel proved to be a little nerve-wracking since protesters had just closed Bangkok’s downtown, which they named Bangkok Shutdown. The Dusit Thani Hotel turned out to be one of their seven barriers!
So, as our cab approached the Dusit Thani Hotel, armed guys in masks with rifles and firearms greeted us. Very ominous! Fortunately, they didn’t stop us or ask us any questions as we left. When we first walked into the Dusit Thani lobby, we were greeted warmly and even upgraded to a room away from the demonstrations. We were all very relieved and joyful together!

The Dusit Thani was Bangkok’s first ever five-star hotel, and it still maintains all of its splendour today. Huge chandeliers decorate the big and majestic entry hall. From the foyer, a stairway descends to a charming cafe/restaurant with views of a magnificent waterfall and garden bar. Even a woman who plays a Thai musical instrument on the stairs during the day.
We skipped out on all of the hotel’s eateries and cafés as well as its clothing and souvenir stores. But we did eat breakfast, and it was fantastic! One of the nicest breakfast buffets we’ve ever had, OMG! Everything was there! We frequented the lovely bakery in the basement on multiple occasions. delicious bread and pastries!
Their high-speed internet was a bonus. The internet speed at the Dusit Thani Hotel must be among the quickest in Bangkok; at least, it was the fastest we’ve ever experienced in Thailand.
Together with my brother and his fiancée, we completely fell in love with the Dusit Thani Hotel in Bangkok and relished our stay to the fullest. The hotel personnel provided excellent service and made us feel very welcome. It is impossible to overstate how kind and generous everyone was. We had a royal feeling about us!
